Discovering the Heart of School Choice in Bali

Dear Parents,

As you evaluate educational options for your children, we invite you to look beyond market branding and perceived prestige, to what truly shapes successful school experiences. At Skyhawk Academy (formerly Skywalker Academy), we pride ourselves on delivering a stable, high-quality education based on the English National Curriculum and lasting relationships. Our alumni and their families offer valuable insights into the realities of moving within Bali’s dynamic international school community.

Many families in Bali are transient and students often continue their education abroad. Still, we want to highlight our 2024 graduates—the first cohort to complete our Middle School Programme, many of whom joined during the 2019 COVID lockdowns. With our High School program planned to begin in July 2027, we share three alumni stories that illustrate common themes and challenge the idea that larger always means better.

  1. Student A (female, left after Grade 7 in 2024)

K was a bright, kind student who thrived academically at Skyhawk. Her family moved her to a larger international school seeking broader social opportunities. Initially, she enjoyed new friendships and a leadership role, but the academic standards proved inconsistent and many peers soon left, creating instability. K changed schools three times in just over a year. Recently reconnecting with former Skyhawk classmates highlighted for us how vital enduring relationships are to a child’s wellbeing.

  1. Student B (male, completed Grade 9)

B finished Grade 9 at Skywalker as a focused student, excelling in mathematics and the arts. After transferring to a larger school, he left within six months due to inconsistent teaching and weak English instruction. At his next school he pursued an accelerated IGCSE program in one year instead of two (based on his academic level compared to others). The pace may have left gaps in essential knowledge, reflected in mixed exam results (Bs and Cs). B is now on a steady path toward A Levels with plans for university abroad—demonstrating ambition but also the importance of solid foundations over rushed timelines.

  1. Student C (female, completed Grade 9 level)

C was a shy, hardworking student who made steady progress at Skywalker despite being about a year behind her age grade. After transferring, she was placed directly into advanced AS Level classes without the IGCSE preparation she needed (AS Level is roughly equivalent to Grade 13). The mismatch, combined with frequent teacher turnover, led to learning gaps and disappointing exam outcomes.

Key insights from these stories

These patterns are common across international schools in Bali:

- New environment and social excitement can fade without true stability.

- Frequent school changes disrupt deep learning and lasting friendships.

- Accelerated programs may create knowledge gaps despite faster credentials.

- Higher fees and international branding do not guarantee consistent quality or community support.

Our approach at Skyhawk Academy

We champion steady pacing, consistent teaching, and a close-knit community. These principles build the foundation for enduring academic success and wellbeing. Smaller class sizes allow for personalized attention and meaningful connections with peers and teachers.

What to consider when choosing a school in Bali

- Student stability: Strong peer networks and continuity matter for emotional and academic development.

- Consistency over prestige: Look for evidence of steady teaching quality and measurable outcomes.

- Appropriate pacing: Ensure programs provide the foundational learning students need before acceleration.

- Peer culture: Observe maturity, behaviour, and the school’s overall atmosphere.

- Long-term fit: Prioritise environments that support sustained growth rather than short-term excitement.

Final thoughts

In Bali’s vibrant but transient educational scene, changing schools can feel like an easy fix. Yet program structure, teaching quality, and community stability often matter far more than new facilities or reputation. As you consider school options, prioritise the values that promote lasting growth and wellbeing.

At Skyhawk Academy, we are committed to academic excellence and a supportive environment where every student feels valued and prepared for and into the future. That's why we have decided it is time to launch the Highschool Program in July 2027.

We hope these insights help as you choose the right educational home for your child.
